Undo and Redo
What is ‘Undo’ in Procreate, and how do I use it?
Undo is the term we use for going back a step. Most changes you make in your artwork are marked down as a step in your process that you can go back to. Redo is the term for going forward a step. Undos are sequential, and will be ‘forgotten’ when you return to the Gallery or exit Procreate.
This is because your artwork is saved automatically in its current state. There are multiple ways to undo and redo steps in Procreate, and this article explains each one. In each active session, up to 250 of your most recent steps can be undone.
Heads Up
If you undo a few steps, then take an action or paint a stroke, you can no longer redo the old strokes, because you are creating a new undo sequence.
Undo with gestures
This video demonstrates how to undo with the two-finger tap gesture, as well as how to invoke rapid undo and redo:
Tap two fingers on the canvas at the same time to undo an action
Tap with three fingers to redo an action
Tap multiple times to affect multiple steps
Tap hold two fingers to rapidly undo
Tap hold three fingers to rapidly redo
You can adjust the delay before rapid undo and redo kicks in by adjusting the Rapid Undo Delay slider in Actions → Prefs.
Undo with the Sidebar buttons
This video demonstrates how to undo with the Sidebar buttons:
When the Sidebar is active, you should be able to see two small buttons below the bottom slider.
Tap the left-facing arrow to undo an action
Tap the right-facing arrow to redo an action
Tap multiple times to affect multiple steps
You can also tap hold on either of these to rapidly undo or redo
Single Touch Gestures Companion Undo and Redo
If you find using the gestures difficult or it’s not feasible for you, you can enable the Single Touch Gestures Companion. To do this, open your iPad’s Settings app and scroll down the list on the left. Find and tap on ‘Apps’, then find and tap on ‘Procreate’, then toggle on ‘Single Touch Gestures Companion’.
The following video shows how to enable the Single Touch Gestures Companion, and how to undo and redo using it:
Head to Actions , then Help
Tap on Advanced Settings
Scroll down and toggle on 'Single Touch Gestures Companion'
Tap the small left-facing arrow with 'Procreate' adjacent in the top left to return to Procreate
Tap Undo on the small floating window to undo an action
Tap Redo on the small floating window to redo an action
Reposition the window by dragging it with the small grey bar at its top
Undo using QuickMenu
Enable QuickMenu:
You can customise your workflow to pop Undo and Redo into your QuickMenu. To enable QuickMenu (it’s off by default), head to Actions → Prefs → Gesture Controls → QuickMenu, then toggle on the way you want to invoke it:
Undo and redo using QuickMenu
The following video shows you how to set up and use undo and redo in the QuickMenu. If you have not yet enabled QuickMenu, see the video above:
Summon QuickMenu in the canvas using the method you have selected in Actions → Prefs → Gesture Controls → QuickMenu
Tap hold one of the radial options, scroll down the list and change it to Undo/Redo
Tap on either option to invoke that effect
Pro Tip
If you use an Apple Pencil and mainly paint with this, set QuickMenu to Touch and you can summon and swipe quickly to invoke any of the radial options.
