Converting visual content to Flipbooks
Our redesigned Flipbook intends to make frame-by-frame animation easier and more intuitive. This new Flipbook allows for multiple tracks, track-based blend modes, masks and opacity, as well as robust drawing tools, including Selections and Transform.
Updating from Procreate Dreams 1?
If you need help with file upgrading, head to this article . Jump to this article if you’d like information on cropping and resampling drawings and animations.
If you have updated from Procreate Dreams 1 to Procreate Dreams 2, when you tap on a piece of content on a file that you have upgraded, you will have the option to combine all the continuous drawings on that track to a Flipbook animation.
Converting content to a Flipbook
In Procreate Dreams 2, you can select multiple pieces of content on the Timeline and convert it into our new and improved Flipbook. Such content includes drawings, animations, Text and video tracks.
One significant benefit of this is that you can consolidate all of your visual content into one easy-to-manage set of cel animations. This is especially helpful if you are intending to layer multiple frame-by-frame animations together - you can still keep them contained but edit them as you see fit, by editing the Flipbook itself.
There are three main ways to convert content to Flipbooks, detailed in the sections below.
1. Converting after updating from Procreate Dreams 1
When working in a file upgraded from Procreate Dreams 1 to Procreate Dreams 2, any time you first tap on a drawing, you will be asked if you would like to convert it, if it satisfies certain criteria:
if the drawing track contains a few different frames in a row
these frames aren't held for too long
they have gaps between them that aren't too large
Heads Up
When converting drawings in a converted file, Procreate Dreams will convert everything applicable on that track that meets the criteria, up until it hits anything that fails to meet the criteria, such as a single image that is unchanged for 8+ frames. You can still tap further drawings on the same track to begin the conversion for them.
Choosing ‘Single drawing’ will keep all images on the track as singular drawings and not convert them into a Flipbook. You can always try this later, as detailed below.
2. Converting a Group or video to a Flipbook
Tap and hold on a Group, then select Convert to Flipbook from the context menu.
Tap and hold on a video, then select Convert to Flipbook from the context menu.
3. Converting multiple pieces of content to a Flipbook
Using Multi-select , you can highlight multiple pieces of content across different tracks, then tap and hold on any of them and select 'Convert to Flipbook'.
Rules for conversion
When you convert content to a Flipbook, Procreate Dreams will attempt to intelligently convert each different type of content where possible.
Drawings
For drawings set to the 'Normal' blend mode (in the Timeline), and that have no keyframes or changes to opacity, they will be kept as static 'Drawings' with all their Drawing Layers intact:
For drawings that have only one keyframe set for any particular property (including Opacity), or a non-default blend mode, the drawing layers will be flattened, but the durations will be kept.
For drawings that have multiple keyframes, each individual frame will be rasterized and rendered out independently.
Heads Up
'Rasterized' means that the drawn content and any changes to it will have all its values consolidated into the pixel image. It is destructive - it will look as it used to, but it will be a cel animation (string of frames) instead of an element with keyframes applied.
Videos
For videos, each frame will be rendered separately into a cel animation.
Text
For Text that is not animated and has no changing values, it will be rasterized and rendered out as a frame that matches the duration.
For Text that is animated or has changing values, each frame will be rasterized independently as a cel animation.
Audio
Because audio is unsupported in Flipbook, it will remain in its position on the Timeline. All content will attempt to keep its original duration and positions in the Timeline, when combined into the Flipbook.
Reducing Flipbook size
After converting your drawing track to a Flipbook, you may have to crop the image contents to fit within the working area. For information on this, please check out this article .
Storage space issues?
In some cases, you may encounter a failure when converting visuals into a Flipbook due to low storage space. Check out this Apple article for information on how to clear up space, then reattempt the conversion using the 'Try again' option in the dialogue that appeared.
Head to the next section for details on how to share the file if you have ongoing issues with the conversion after clearing space.
Still having trouble?
If you have cleared up some space and you’re still running into trouble with a Flipbook conversion, you might see this dialogue:
In this instance, please consider reaching out to our team using this link , and providing us with the affected .drm file when you do so.
To share the .drm file with us, tap hold the movie in the Theater and select Share → Procreate Dreams → Reduced file size, then attach it to the Support Form request.
