"This drawing/Flipbook needs resizing"
If you have a movie that was created in Procreate Dreams version 1, you may have drawings and Flipbooks that extend beyond the maximum allowed resolution , which depends on your model of iPad.
If you’re after information on general file conversion after updating, check this article . If you need help with converting track content to Flipbooks, check out this article .
Why do I need to do this?
Good question. We have overhauled the entire Procreate Dreams engine to ensure that you have a better time painting, animating, and editing.
Part of this was ensuring that you could use brushes and tools like Selection and Transform just as easily as you can in Procreate, for a pixel perfect painting experience. To facilitate this, we had to condense the working area in Procreate Dreams.
You can still paint on a large canvas, and scale and move things beyond the Stage area so long as they are within the max resolution.
When does the resizing happen?
After converting a movie from Procreate Dreams 1 to Procreate Dreams 2 , the first time you tap on any drawing or Flipbook that is too large, you will be prompted to resize the content.
Heads Up
You do not need to convert images or drawings to view them, but you will need to convert them if you would like to edit or add to them further.
If your drawing or Flipbook must be converted, you will see a dialogue appear that states ‘this drawing/Flipbook needs resizing’, like in the below image. The different options for resizing (Fix it for me, Custom Resample, and Crop) are detailed in the coming sections.
Fix it for me
This method aims to fix your image content by resampling it down by the least it needs to, to fit it within the maximum resolution.
This should be okay in most cases, but if you have possible errant strokes on the edges of your drawing, you might want to consider using the Advanced options, detailed below.
Advanced → Custom Resample drawing
Allows you to resample the drawn content using interpolation so that it occupies less pixels. If you opt for this, you will be presented with the resample drawing interface, with a preview of your content:
See a current preview of your image content based on your current resample settings.
Drag the four handles around the edge of the image to make it fit within the grey target area.
Heads Up
Because you are resampling the entire image, the aspect ratio will be locked - you will only be able to scale up and down uniformly.
In Settings, you can manually adjust the pixel resolution, Quality percentage and Interpolation method.
The available interpolation methods are Nearest Neighbour (crispier and more jagged edges) and Bilinear (softer, less crisp edges).
Scrub your animation (if it’s a Flipbook) left and right to see how your adjustments will affect different frames’ content.
Return to your movie without applying the resample changes.
Revert any pending changes and return the image preview to its previous state.
Enact any pending changes to the drawing or animation.
Tap and hold on this to change the image preview to how it appeared prior to any changes you've been making. Release to return the preview to normal - showcasing your intended changes.
Crop drawing
If you opt for Cropping your image content, you will be presented with the Crop drawing interface:
See a current preview of your image content based on your crop choices.
Adjust the size of your image using the handles near the image bounds.
In Settings, you can manually specify the pixel size for your drawing or animation.
Pro Tip
If you would like your crop area to retain the original ratio of your image, tap the chainlink icon between the pixel readouts so that it's highlighted.
Scrub your animation (if it’s a Flipbook) left and right to see how your adjustments will affect different frames’ content.
Return to your movie without applying the crop changes.
Revert any pending changes and return the image preview to its previous state.
Enact any pending changes to the drawing or animation.
Tap and hold on this to change the image preview to how it appeared prior to any changes you've been making. Release to return the preview to normal - showcasing your intended changes.
Resize unsuccessful?
If you attempt to resize a drawing or Flipbook and it fails, your iPad may be running low on iPad storage space:
Head to this Apple article for information on how to manage your iPad Storage and free up some space.
Tapping 'Open settings' on the dialogue will open the iPadOS Settings app and take you directly to your iPad Storage. After clearing up some space, return to your movie in Procreate Dreams and select 'Try again' to reattempt the resizing the drawing or Flipbook. Tap Cancel to exit the resizing interface.
Resize successful!
Upon successfully cropping or resampling an image so that it fits within the resolution limit, you will be returned to the Timeline. You can of course tap two fingers to Undo on the Stage or Timeline to revert the resizing action, if you are unhappy with the result.
If you have any troubles converting the drawings or animations to Flipbooks, please reach out to our team and provide us with the file. To export the file, tap and hold on it in the Theater and select Share → Procreate Dreams → Reduced file size.
