Sketch, ink, paint, smudge, and erase with hundreds of versatile brushes. Organize and store your existing brushes or import custom brushes you wish to use.
To access Draw & Paint mode, you must create or edit a Drawing or Flipbook.
A Drawing is best suited to a static element or one that you intend to keyframe, like a background or a cloud moving across the sky, for example.
A Flipbook is a multi-track cel animation that is completely contained. Use this to produce frame-by-frame animations with layers.
To create a new Drawing or Flipbook, tap the plus button on the far right of the main toolbar to enter the Create menu. From here, tap Drawing or Flipbook to produce one on your current Timeline position, or on a new track above if you don't have space on the current track.
Once you're in Draw & Paint mode, access the various tools described below to create your visual content, and tap Drawing/Flipbook → Finish Drawing/Flipbook to return to the Timeline.

Sketch, ink, paint, color, shade, and texture in a wide variety of mediums to add pigment to your Stage. Explore the Brushes menu for hundreds of unique brushes with a variety of textures and effects.
Tap the Paint tool to select it.
Tap the Paint tool again to select a brush from Brushes. Pinch inwards on Brushes to access your other brush libraries.
Use your finger or Apple Pencil on the cavnas to create strokes.
Blend your artwork, smooth strokes, and mix color by moving pigment around your Stage.
Tap the Smudge tool to select it.
Tap the Smudge tool again to select a brush from Brushes. Pinch inwards on Brushes to access your other brush libraries.
Use your finger or Apple Pencil on the Stage to blend your artwork.
Erase to remove pigment from your Stage and paint away mistakes, create areas of transparency, and soften your artwork.
Tap the Erase tool to select it.
Tap the Erase tool again to select a brush from Brushes. Pinch inwards on Brushes to access your other brush libraries.
Use your finger or Apple Pencil on the Stage to erase parts of your artwork.
Tap on the chevron next to your brush library and select 'Back to libraries' to view your brush libraries, or pinch inwards with two fingers on the Brushes interface. Tap another brush library to select and enter it.
Use the two sliders in the left sidebar to adjust the size and opacity of your brushstrokes. This also applies to using brushes with the Smudge tool - use the lower sidebar to affect how strong the smudging effect is.
Use the buttons below to Undo (upper button) and Redo (lower button) your recent actions.
Tap and hold an unselected Paint , Smudge , or Erase icon to switch and transfer your current brush settings to your newly selected tool.
Tap either slider on the sidebar to bring up the brush preview. Tap the plus button in the top right of the preview to set a memory point for brush size or opacity.
Tap on any saved point in the sidebar to jump to that saved size, and tap the minus [minus icon] in the top right to remove the memory point.
You can have a maximum of four memorized sizes and four memorized opacities per brush.
Double-tap your Apple Pencil to switch between tools in Paint & Draw. This will switch between your current tool and your previous tool.
You can turn this off in iPadOS Settings: Apple Pencil → Double Tap → OFF.
Painting with Apple Pencil Pro unlocks the ability to rotate your brush as you make strokes using the barrel roll feature. This will rotate the stamp of the brush as you paint. For Classic Library brushes, look for those with 'Roll' in the name, like Charcoal Roll or Marker Roll, to make use of barrel roll.
To clearly see the angle of your brush stamp while painting or using hover, head to Draw & Paint settings → Prefs and customize your brush cursor.

Find your most recently used brushes in the Recent set. Look here first when searching for brushes you regularly use.
The right-hand panel of the Brushes interface lists all available brushes in a selected brush set. The brush list displays the name of each brush and a preview of the stroke it makes. Tap a brush to start using it.
Brush sets are sorted by medium and style in the left panel of the brush. Scroll the list to navigate all the brush sets. Tap a brush set to see the brushes it contains.
You can import .brushset files by dragging and dropping them in, or by using the + button in the top right of the Brushes interface → Import from Files. You can also select Create new library using this button, allowing you to better sort your brushes.
Brush libraries are accessible by pinching inwards on the Brushes interface, or tapping the arrow to the right of your current library name.
Brush libraries contain all your brush sets, and you can add more libraries by dragging in .brushlib files from Procreate or the Files app. You can also create new libraries to sort your brushes using the + button in the top right and selecing Create new library.
Search through your brush sets and libraries for a particular brush by swiping downwards on the Brushes interface.
Begin typing to see the results populate below. You will see results for brushes, brush sets and brush libraries.
Tap on a result to head straight to and select that particular brush, set, or library.
Import custom-made Procreate brushes and brush sets to expand your Brush Library.
To import a brush or brush set, tap the plus button in the top right of your Brushes interface, then tap Import from Files.
Alternatively, drag and drop the brush file from another app onto the Stage or the brush library.
When a single brush is imported it will appear in the Imported brush set unless you've dragged it into a specific brush set in the brush library.
When a brush set is imported it will appear in the list of brush sets.
You can rearrange your brushes and brushes and brush sets with drag and drop.
The default brush sets cover varying artistic styles of drawing and painting. The Animation Brushes library contains an array of different brushes designed to make animating in different styles fun and practical. You'll find brushes for sketching, linework, backgrounds, patterns, graphics, etc.
From sketching, inking, and drawing through to painting, calligraphy, and airbrushing — most traditional styles are also covered.
Procreate Dreams also features a range of abstract and textured brushes you can’t find in traditional art. You can find Weather Elements, Material textures, and lighting Luminance Brush Sets others within the Brush Library. Check out the sets in the Classic Library in the Procreate Handbook .
