Symmetry guides mirror your art across multiple planes for mind-bending effects.
To set up a Symmetry Guide, expand your top toolbar with the ellipsis, then head to Actions → Canvas and tap Symmetry. To edit your grid tap Edit Drawing Guides.
By default your Drawing Guides interface will appear condensed down the bottom of the screen, to afford you more space. To expand this, drag the grey handle at the center upwards. Drag it downwards to condense the menu again.
From this view you can position and rotate your Drawing Guide.
Drag the blue Positional node to move the whole grid over the canvas.
Drag the green Rotational node (top center by default) to rotate the grid lines.
To reset the grid to the default position, tap one of the nodes, then tap Reset.
Drag the grey handle upwards to access more settings for your Drawing Guide.
To return to the canvas without making a change, tap Cancel. To commit your changes, tap the blue tick.
When you have expanded your Drawing Guide Settings with the grey handle, you'll be presented with the following options. Symmetry is the option on the far right on the top bar that bears four icons.
Adjust the color of the guide lines using the hue bar at the top of the Drawing Guides screen.
Adjust the transparency of the guide lines from invisible to opaque.
Adjust the thickness of the guide lines from invisible to noticeable.
By default, a new Symmetry Guide will use Mirror Symmetry. This reflects (and flips) your strokes across the guideline.
In Rotational Symmetry mode, your stroke reflects and rotates. The reproduction flips horizontally and vertically at the same time.
Experiment to see the difference in effect. Tap the Rotational Symmetry toggle to switch between the two behaviors.
Toggling this ON is important for the Symmetry Guide → Only with Assisted Drawing ON will the paint, smudge, and erase strokes you make on your layer be symmetrically applied to the other regions specified in your Symmetry Guide.
If your Symmetry Guide is visible but your strokes are not being mirrored, check this setting.
Equally, if your strokes are being mirrored when your Drawing Guide is off, check this setting.
Scroll up (drag a finger upwards) to see the current type of Symmetry applied. By default the Symmetry type is Vertical, but there are four options. These are detailed in the section below.
You will know the current Symmetry applied by what follows 'Symmetry:' in the readout at the bottom of the Drawing Guide Settings.
To return to the canvas without making a change, tap Cancel. To commit your changes, tap the blue tick.
This mode puts a vertical guideline down the middle of your canvas. Anything you draw on one side of the canvas will reproduce in real-time on the other side.
You can move and rotate this guide to create mirrored results on an angle.
This mode puts a horizontal guideline across the middle of your canvas. Anything you draw on the top half of the canvas will reproduce in real-time on the bottom half, and vice versa.
You can move and rotate this guide to create mirrored results on an angle.
This mode divides your canvas into quadrants using a horizontal and vertical guideline. Anything you draw in one quadrant will reproduce in real-time in all the others.
This mode splits your canvas into eight segments using horizontal, vertical, and diagonal guides. Anything you draw in one segment will reproduce in real-time in all the others.
