Easing
Easing alters the look and feel of an animation by affecting its speed and timing to achieve more natural movement. Procreate Dreams comes with some common easing curves to help you bring more organic motion to your animation.
Perform or Keyframe mode
To view and adjust your easing settings for keyframes, you'll need to be in either Perform or Keyframe mode. To do this, tap on Perform or Keyframe at the bottom of your Timeline.
Both of these modes expose the keyframe data for your tracks, so that you can add, view, and modify the keyframe and thus easing values.
Easing types
Knowing what type of movement each easing curve applies will help you understand how easing works.
When you tap and hold between two keyframes, the currently-set easing type will be noted in the centre between them, and small vertical markers will indicate the cadence of the change between the two keyframes.
Pro Tip
If you tap and hold on the easing label directly (e.g. Ease In), you will be able to set the easing from here, too.
Linear
When set to linear, the steps (markers) between the keyframes have consistent spacing. This means that the change between the first and the second keyframe is consistent over time.
Ease in
When set to Ease in, the value change will have more steps near the first keyframe, and less towards the second keyframe. This means that there will be a a slower rate of change at the start, and the rate of change will speed up over time.
Ease out
When set to Ease out, the value change will have less steps near the first keyframe, and more towards the second keyframe. This means that there will be a a faster rate of change at the start, and the rate of change will slow down over time, as the second keyframe is approached.
Ease in and out
When set to Ease in and out, the value change will have more steps near the two keyframes, and less in the middle, between them. This means that the value change will start slow, speed up in the middle, and then slow down towards the end.
Pro Tip
Understanding easing types helps select which one to apply to an animation. Sometimes you may need to combine different easing to achieve an effect. A bouncing ball would use ease out as the ball reaches its peak and slows down, and then ease in as it begins its descent - gravity takes effect and the ball falls to the floor faster and faster.
Applying easing
Easing is applied between two individual keyframes. Procreate Dreams applies default easing when you create new keyframes based on the last easing type you have used.
Change and view easing
Tap and hold between the keyframes you wish to apply easing to. You can also tap hold a singular keyframe and set the easing between this and the next keyframe.
Tap Set easing. The current easing type will be displayed on the keyframe track.
Select an easing type from the options available.
Heads Up
If you don’t see the Set easing option you may need to tap Expand and then set easing on the individual keyframe tracks within.
Set all easings
Quickly apply easing across an entire keyframe track at once.
Tap and hold anywhere on a keyframe track until a context menu appears.
Tap Set all easings and select an easing type.
Heads Up
If you apply Set all easings to Move & Scale, Noise, or HSB, it will apply the selected easing type to all the individual parameters across the entire keyframe track.
