Snapping helps keep your transformations aligned when moving an object. It also helps keep objects in proportion when re-sizing.
When you move or transform your content with Snapping on, blue guide-lines will appear on-screen. These show positional or scale points that might be helpful. Your content will snap to things such as centre points of your canvas or items sitting on other layers.
To find Snapping, swipe upwards on the grey handle at the top of the Transform toolbar. While in Freeform, Uniform, or Distort mode, tap the leftmost icon. Tapping the button will cause a Settings panel will appear.
This controls sensitivity and how your content responds when Snapping is on. Understanding how these controls affect Snapping can help with your workflow.
Activate Snapping by tapping on the toggle. Snapping causes blue and yellow snap-lines when you move and scale your content.
The blue lines are 'snapping' your content to points relative to the bounding boxes of other layers' contents. The yellow lines are snapping the content to the canvas area itself.
The two settings Distance and Velocity only relate to Snapping; they have no impact on Magnetics.
When toggled on, Magnetics allows your content to easily slide along the blue guide-lines. This blue guides appear as you move your content around your canvas.
There is more information about Magnetics in the section directly below.
Distance controls the distance in pixels an object needs to be before your content snaps to it.
At 1 Distance your content will freely slide around the canvas, only snapping when exactly aligned to an object. At 50 Distance your content will ‘jump’ to snap on to any object within a 50 pixels distance.
Velocity controls the speed your content moves before it activates the object snapping guides.
With Velocity set at None your content will freely slide around the canvas without activating any object snapping guidelines. At Max Velocity your content will activate all available guidelines unless you are moving it quickly.
Experiment with Distance and Velocity to find the Snapping sensitivity that works best for you.
To switch Magnetics on, expand the Transform toolbar by dragging the grey swipe handle upwards, then tap the Snapping icon on the left. Now tap the toggle on Magnetics.
You'll need to be in Freeform, Uniform, or Distort mode to ensure that Snapping is available on the far left in the expanded Transform settings.
When Magnetics is active you’ll see guidelines popping up as your content snaps from one useful position to another.
Magnetics allows you to move content perfectly horizontally, vertically, or across any axis that is a 15º increment from those.
While you are dragging content, hold another finger down to lock moving your content along that axis. This is important to ensure that the axis is not modified as you're moving or scaling your content.
